Javier López-Quiles, project manager from the Spanish Association for Standardisation (UNE), has participated in a workshop organised by the Innovative Materials for Fission and Fusion (INNUMAT) on October 16th-17th at the Center for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research (CIEMAT) in Madrid, Spain.
During this workshop, he introduced the work carried out regarding standardisation within the ToughSteel project, which has contributed to spread the knowledge gained and to make it applicable by the industry.
In particular, ToughSteel has boosted the publication of two CEN Workshop Agreements (CWAs), one describing existing methodologies for fracture toughness evaluation in metal sheets, and another on a new testing procedure to estimate the crack propagation resistance of advanced high-strength steel sheets using a Cracking Resistance Index (CRI).
The INNUMAT workshop shared different initiatives on the qualification of innovative materials as solution, as protective coating, not only applicable to nuclear reactors design and operation (both fission and fusion) but also in other applications such as concentrated solar power (CSP) or the automotive industry.
