The ToughSteel project celebrated the industrial workshop “Fracture toughness: an additional parameter to control sheet metal quality” in Ravenna (Italy) on April 19th, 2023. The event was jointly organised by AIM, the Italian Association for Metallurgy, Eurecat and Marcegaglia.
This workshop presented some of the experimental results obtained in the framework of ToughSteel’s Open Call, demonstrating how fracture toughness measurements can help to better understand the fracture behaviour of high-strength metal sheets and improve material selection in different industrial processes.
During the event the ToughSteel project concept and the research done in fracture toughness was introduced. In addition, the results of two case studies of ToughSteel Open Call carried out in the factories of Marcegaglia and Forvia Faurecia were presented.
After the presentations, the workshop concluded with a visit to Marcegaglia’s plant. Marcegaglia Steel transforms and markets carbon and stainless steel products. It is Europe’s leading producer of carbon and stainless-steel welded tubes with a wide range of products and finishes with its own plants. Marcegaglia Ravenna is the main carbon steel plant of the Group and the one with the largest service centre in Italy for automated finishing, slitting and packaging of strips and sheets.
